2205 is a duplex stainless steel, with a chemical composition of nearly equal proportions of austenite and ferrite. This combination allows the alloy to be stronger and tougher than standard austenitic steels.
The 2205 grade steel is one of the most widely used ferritic and austenitic duplex stainless steel. The standard of this grade of steel has been refined over the years creating a versatile and strong product. It is has an excellent corrosion resistance (including in seawater), it is weldable by all standard methods, and has a high heat resistance.
Sandvik SAF 2205, also known as SAF 2205, is Sandvik's trademark for a duplex stainless steel characterized by high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, high resistance to pitting, crevice and general corrosion and very high mechanical strength.

2205 is the most widely used duplex (ferritic/austenitic) stainless steel grade. It finds applications due to both excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. The standard duplex S31803 composition has over the years been refined by many steel suppliers, and the resulting restricted composition range was endorsed as UNS S32205 in 1996.
